They are characterized by high water vapor content and strong low level winds, and form a part of the broader warm conveyor belt of extratropical cyclones. Although the meridional water vapor transport within ARs is critical for water resources, ARs can also cause disastrous floods especially when encountering mountainous terrain. They were labeled as atmospheric rivers in the 1990s, and have since become a well-studied feature of the midlatitude climate. We briefly review the conceptual model, the methods used to identify them, their main climatological characteristics, their impacts, the predictive ability of numerical weather prediction models, their relationship with large-scale ocean-atmosphere dynamics, possible changes under future climates, and some future challenges.

Investigation of the Relation between South and Southwest Iran's Heavy Rainfall with Atmospheric Rivers (ARs).
In this study, we tried to identify the sources of moisture and its direction of heavy rainfall in south and southwest of Iran by using a new algorithm based on atmospheric rivers. For this purpose, daily rainfall of 17 synoptic stations in the period 1986 to 2015 in south and southwestern Iran that have a common time span and fully cover the study area is used. Also from the data set of the Nat...
متن کاملNew estimates of global emissions of N2O from rivers and estuaries
We present new estimates of emissions of nitrous oxide (N2O) from rivers and estuaries, using the NEWS-DIN model. NEWS-DIN is a model of the global transport of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) by rivers to coastal waters (Dumont et al. forthcoming). It calculates DIN export rates as a function of watershed characteristics, including human influences. We used the calculated DIN export rates b...
متن کاملFlooding on California’s Russian River: Role of atmospheric rivers
[1] Experimental observations collected during meteorological field studies conducted by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration near the Russian River of coastal northern California are combined with SSM/I satellite observations offshore to examine the role of landfalling atmospheric rivers in the creation of flooding. While recent studies have documented the characteristics and im...
متن کاملSolar Mini-Dimming Kinematics and Their Positive Correlations with Coronal Mass Ejections and Prominence
Solar mini-dimmings can be detect in the Extreme Ultra-Violet coronal eruptions. Here, sequences of 171_A images taken by Solar Dynamic Observatory/Atmospheric Imaging Assembaly on 13 June 2010 are used. In this special day, both of coronal mass ejection and prominence were observed. The average velocities and accelerations of 500 mini-dimmings which were detected using on feature based classif...
متن کاملFactors Influencing Mini-Clinical Evaluation Exercise Scores: A Review Article
Introduction: The Mini-Clinical Evaluation Exercise (Mini-CEX ) is widely used to assess clinical performance because of its practicality. Although initial studies have supported its reliability and validity, the utility of Mini-CEX is under serious debate due to inconsistencies in rater judgments. This study aimed to review the relevant literature on the utility of Mini-CEX in order to find ou...
